Killifish in Focus June 2006

Pseudoepiplatys annulatus

by Serkan Alasya

This month the killifish in focus is Pseudoepiplatys annulatus the Clown Panchax . This species can be seen at some aquarium shops every now and then. This interesting killifish is fairly small, berely growing to the size of an adult neon tetra.

What's in a name?

One of the most challenging things about Killifish keeping is actually keeping up with the name changes!

This species has been placed in its own subgenus Pseudoepiplatys. In some literature you'll still come accross this killifish as Epiplatys annulatus Another way of writing this killies scientific name would be Epiplatys (Pseudoepiplatys) annulatus.

Like all members of the Epiplatys genus annulatus is also a surface dweller. The fish hanging at the top water column for extended periods of time. Feeding annulatus is not a problem. Being a small fish however all the food offered should be small in size. annulatus takes flakes and granules easily, just make sure you crumble the dry food into smaller pieces. Of course live foods are taken with relish.

Breeding

To breed annulatus floating breeding mops is all that is needed.

The eggs are really small so be prepared to raise tiny fry. Quite often the most challenging part of breeding annulatus is not getting eggs, but actually rairing the fry.

Previous Months

June 2007 - Epiplatys sexfasciatus
March 2007 - Aphyosemion scheeli
August 2006 - Chromaphyosemion splendopleure
July 2006 - Fundulopanchax sjoestedti
June 2006 - Pseudoepiplatys annulatus
May 2006 - Fundulopanchax gardneri Akure
April 2006 - Fundulopanchax nigerianus Jos Plateau

Suitable tank mates

These fish are very peaceful and easy going, as long as you keep their relatively small size in mind you can house them with many other fishes.

I've kept annulatus with guppies, cory cats, bristlenoses, as well as other smaller Epiplatys killifishes and lampeyes.
