Killifish in Focus April 2006

Fundulopanchax nigerianus Jos Plateau

by Serkan Alasya

This month the killifish in focus is Fundulopanchax nigerianus Jos Plateau. Recently (mid-late 2005) the fish were available through a wholesaler in Melbourne as 'gardneri'. Subsequently in a Canberra aquarium shop these fish were offered for sale for $39.95 a pair. Personally looking at the quality of the fish it was a great price.

Naturally, I bought a pair which settled in very well and started producing eggs in short order. The two images on this page are off the original male I have bought. I was fortunate enough to get in touch with the breeder from Melbourne who supplied the wholesaler with the fish so I was able to get a bit more information about this handsome killifish.

What's in a name?

One of the most challenging things about Killifish keeping is actually keeping up with the name changes!

The breeder this fish originated from indicated the fish he has was called: gardneri subspecies gardneri Jos plateou Nigeria sino.Name obuduennse. Currently the name this kilifish goes under is; as in the title, Fundulopanchax nigerianus Jos Plateau.

As the current scientific name and location indicate this species is found in Nigeria and was collected from Jos Plateau.

The above image is one of the offspring of the Jos Plateau picture on the top.

Breeding To breed Jos Plateau sinking breeding mops is all that is needed. My current set-ups include two tanks with a single pair in each and a third tank with 10 individuals. I am able to collect a few eggs from the mops in each tank.

If the pair is young expect to collect many unfertile eggs. On the other hand fertile eggs are not overly sensitive. Water incubate the fertile eggs for couple of weeks and you'll have fry swimming in your tanks in no time.

This is the female of the initial pair purchased. She is the mother of the male picture above.
